The Hanson Family

Hanson Cutting Horses is an elite training operation located in Weatherford, Texas, a town also known as "the Cutting Horse Capital of the World." The facilities, the Lazy H Ranch, are owned by long-time horse enthusiast Sherry Chamberlin who is the proud owner of numerous successful mounts that have been trained and shown by Phil Hanson.

As a second-generation horse trainer, it’s no surprise that Phil has established such a solid reputation in the business. His father, Phil Hanson Sr., is also a trainer who began his focus in reining and reined cow horse training until the past 15 years when he began directing his program toward cutters. Phil also has a younger brother, David, and sister, Brenda, who train and still cater to the reining and reined cow horse industries in California.

Horse training may have seemed like an obvious career choice for Phil early on, but upon graduating high school, he chose a different path and pursued a degree in architectural design. Phil graduated from Phoenix Institute of Technology, but his roots called him back to the saddle soon after when he embarked on a training career that has brought him recognition as a top open rider in today’s competition.

Phil earned his first check in 1984 and has since acquired more than $2.8 million in earnings. He made his first NCHA Open finals in 1996 and returned to the prestigious event in 2005 to place in the top 15 on Rey Jay Play.

Other big wins include Open and Open Reserve Championships at the PCCHA Futurity, the South Point Futurity, the El Rancho Futurity, the Idaho Futurity the Cotton Stakes Derby, as well as top finals finishes at the NCHA Super Stakes and Summer Spectacular. Some of Phil’s most recent victories include Open Championships at the 2009 El Rancho Futurity on Little Silver Belles, the Idaho Futurity on Rubys Royal CD AND a winning title at the 2010 Bonanza Cutting, where he claimed yet another Open Championship on LHR Smooth Jamie May.

Phil and his wife Leah were married in 1983 and have two children. Jake, 25, runs the 2-year-old training operation at Hanson Cutting Horses, and Megan, 23, is a senior at TCU, majoring in Biology and Chemistry. Megan showed as a youth and funded a large portion of her college education through scholarship money earned in the show pen. Jake and his wife, Stephanie, were blessed with their first child, Landon, in March 2009.
